Halloween Pumpkin Dioramas
are a nice edition to your indoor Halloween decorations.
Fun and easy to make, you can let your creative side go a little
crazy! Create your own little Halloween universe in each
one. You'll find that you can make them in as many
sizes as there are foam pumpkins! We've even added
battery powered "candles" to some of ours for a nice
Halloween glow! Kids can sit and stare at them for
hours, they make great night lights for the kids during
Halloween season as well.
What You'll Need: Foam
Craft Pumpkin Assorted Halloween Figurines & Tombstones
Black Acrylic Paint Gray Acrylic Paint Midnight Blue Acrylic Paint Spanish Moss & Reindeer Moss 1 inch Styrofoam Craft Board (to fit the inside bottom of
pumpkin) Serrated Edge Knife or Exacto Tool Glue Gun & Glue Sticks
Tacky Glue or White Craft Glue Paintbrush Paper Towels
Water to Clean Brushes
Pick the size foam pumpkin you'd like to work
with. We chose the standard medium size foam
pumpkin because it allowed us room to work
inside. Cut an opening
in the front using an Exacto Knife or foam
cutting knife. You can make the edges jagged or
cut a nice round or oblong hole.
Paint the inside of the pumpkin black or dark
midnight blue. This will be your night sky and
background when you make your diorama. You'll
probably have to use two coats of acrylic paint
to give a good cover. Use gray to paint in thin
clouds and if you choose, a full moon.
Cut the
Styrofoam Craft Board to
fit inside the bottom of the pumpkin. You may
have to cut an initial shape and then cut that
into pieces to fit it inside. You can also cut
smaller pieces to add higher and lower areas to
the base. You can use a hot glue gun on the
pieces to secure them to the pumpkin and each
other.
Using a tacky craft glue, glue a thin layer of
Reindeer moss to the foam board and a thin
edging of Spanish moss to the opening that
you've cut. Reindeer moss has a different
texture and color than Spanish moss and makes a
better ground covering. You can wait and attach
the Spanish moss to the opening when you finish
the inside of your diorama.
Decide before hand what kind of scene you'd like
to make, a Witches Coven around a fire, a
graveyard, a night of trick or treating. You'll
have to find figurines and pieces to go inside
your diorama. Lemax makes a great selection but
you can now find less expensive versions at mass
retailers like Walgreens and Wal-mart.
Place your scene that way you want it and then
glue into place. Add small battery powered tea
lights or battery pack lights to the inside if
you wish. You can also buy lighted
Jack-O-Lanterns, skulls, street lights and other
things with battery packs on them to add light
to the inside of your diorama.
You now have your finished Halloween Diorama to
proudly display for Halloween! We can be sure
that you'll want to make more than one of these.
Use one with a few lights inside to set on the
night stand in your kid's room, it will give
them a great Halloween world to think about and
maybe even create a story about what's going on
in there!
